Defragging Tutorial

Defragmenting your computer is one of the best things you can do to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.

Windows recommends you do it every month or so.

What is it?
Its where your computer sorts out all your files and puts them in the same place. For example, when you install a game or program etc., some parts of it are saved in one place and others in another. So parts of my Sims games were saved in my CIV games folders etc. This makes your computer run really slowly, and so your games, programs etc. will also run very slow! If you defrag it puts them all in the right place, frees up loads of space and makes everything go really fast.

Why should I do it?
To have a fast computer, of course! Unless you like waiting years for something to open or your games to be slow...

Notes
» If you've never done it before it will take a long time, my computer took 17 hours. However, you can browse the net - you just can't save anything, so no PSP, Animation Shop, Downloads, Playing games etc. because that will mess with the file system. You can pretty much just browse the net.
» You need at least 15% free space.
» It will stop just over 50%, mine stopped at 58%.
» If you do it regularly it won't take as long, so the first time may take a while but do it once a month and it'll be really quick.

How do I do it?
Go to: Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter and then the button at the bottom which is Defragment.

Red Parts: Fragmented Files (Very bad!)
Blue Parts: Contingous Files (Very good!)
Green Parts: Unmovable Files (They're okay, they're the computers core systems)
White Parts: Free Space (Also very good)>

Proof it works:

The top bar shows how fragmented my files were, everything was mixed up causing the computer to get confused. Its like playing a CD but the second five seconds of the first song are somewhere else and it has to go find them, it takes a while.

The bottom bar shows what its like afterwards, more free space and pretty much everything is contingous.

Do you see the huge difference?! My computer is so much faster now, particularly with games like The Sims.

I really recommend you do this, just be patient with it, especially if you've never done it before or its an old computer!
